good vid, i’d love to see more of that kind of things.

i originally did the TGU as a reverse full-gardner…starting on the ground, standing, then lying back down. i haven’t tackled a true gardner yet though, i will probably pick it up when my TGU plateaus.

pushed 80lbs again today, left side & right. 100lbs, here i come!
hi noman, i’m not the most experienced all-arounder but here’s what i would suggest: pick a pressing movement, a pulling movement, and a squatting movement. train them until you plateau, then rotate new lifts in. add equipment as needed. an olympic bar and some plates will get you going, & you can add equipment as you need. a lot of it can be homemade to save money. for example you can rig up a vertical bar deadlift with some pipe & pipe fittings. i hope this was some help.

i love TGUs, i pushed 80lbs last summer at a body weight of 190lbs, & i aim to get 100lbs by the end of this summer! i’ve been thinking about putting up a tips video on my youtube channel, i’ll be sure to post it when i do.

interesting, i hadn’t thought of turning the end on my shoulder…is that to engage the triceps more & use the shoulder to “launch” the DB?

well “seer” it is then, thanks for the info guys. i think my “kansan” got thicker after moving to colorado.
i usually do this lift with a split & try to drop my body arm’s length under the weight for the lockout, then stand up. any tips or tricks for this lift?

you know what they say about guys with big feet, right?
they wear big shoes.
good article, it was cool to see a sample workout program.
hahaha…i think i just found it:
“10. Weaver Stick – Absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to judge fairly. The arm is NEVER straight, and it only takes a tiny little bend to add a few pounds to this lift. The records in this lift really are meaningless. Now STRAP your arm to a fixed pole and THEN see what you can do in the Weaver Stick. That’s the way it should be done.”
glad i fell in love with one of the dumbest lifts in the USAWA!

Small suggestion: Let’s capitalize “Weaver”. We don’t want George Weaver to start turning over in his grave. 🙂i seldom capitalize anything (i type faster that way) no offense or disrespect intended to anyone!

thanks al. every time i start thinking i’ve got a strong grip/forearms i run across something like this!
steve is a great coach as well as just a great all-around human being. really one of my favorite people. whenever i’d tell him about some lift or routine i was trying out he’d say “you need to meet al myers and those odd-lifters, they love that nutty stuff”.
i would love any HG contacts for the denver area, i live in englewood right now, but i work in stapleton and train in littleton. please send any contacts to jfwaveman@yahoo.com, i would really appreciate that. for the moment i’m training super-light on HG, just focusing on technique. i have a big jujitsu competition in august and almost all of my energy in going toward that at the moment. i’d hate to wrench my back picking a caber or something.
well no shame in that!
i’ll do them when i have to, but right now i’m focusing a bit more on one-handed DL & hoping the grip strength carries over for whatever single finger lift is in next year’s grip nationals.
jf
i love grip work a LOT…but man, i just don’t have any interest in pulling up heavy single-finger lifts. i still play guitar a little. but kudos to you for hitting it.
