Technique work with Snatches followed by some Middle Finger Deadlifts. Big pr tonight. Tried 315 twice and it told me to go take a hike. Dropped down to 300 and missed twice. Got mad. Ain’t going to let a weight talk to me like that so I nailed it the third try-YEEHAW! Skin is for wimps!!

Did some technique work on Snatches:Rolling under the bar. Followed with Middle finger Deadlifts. Big pr on these. Funny how these feel like a ton, until I hit some sort of groove. For example, 185lbs almost stayed glued to the floor. 225 FLEW right up!! 275 as well. Two tries @ 315= NOPE! Back down to 300(I like pain) pulled 3 times and nailed it on 3rd!! Got it filmed. Now just got to figure out how to put it on youtube.
Figured what the hell, my cousin(who’s filming) is royally enjoying me hurt. Let’s hit some Turkish get-ups. 50lbs(dumbell) was ok,70lbs felt like death eating a cracker takin’ its time. Cousin told me to man up and hit 85lbs-must of hit a groove, they were the easiest of the lot!!. Let’s go for BIG pain 100lbs, YEEHAW I did it. Got those filmed as well. The Get-ups really nail the Serratus Anterior. Never felt ANYTHING I’ve done previously, work the Serratus like these. Low Traps also trashed. Again nothing I’ve done before has made me say,”what the heck did I do to my Low Traps!?!?”
All-Round Weightlifting is the Jeet-Kun-Do of the strength training world!!

Got to be getting over 100lbs on these ASAP. How can these NOT work you rotator cuff??
Imagine with a 7 foot Olympic style bar would make for an interesting TGU!!

I’m assuming it’s to shorten the distance the dumbell has to travel. We use a similar technique when Log Pressing.

Great article. Through YEARS of stubborness(and fortunately very little in the way of injuries), I’ve come to realize whether it’s the first time or the thousandth time on a particular lift, if I worry about the best technique I can do today, the weight on the bar: WILL TAKE CARE OF IT SELF!!
Yep, it makes stupid sense, but I find it too easy to get caught up in how much weight is on the bar. Fortunately(?), I’ve never been very strong right off the bat so my inuries have been only once.

I don’t know if it’s because I’m honest with my gym lifts or what, but I also see a pretty good increase in a meet. I’ve seen plenty of other competitors wind up getting numbers that are much LOWER than in training. I could NOT handle that. Putting all that time in training, planning, maybe taking time off to travel, plus trip itself just to not PR=no way.
This is my 3rd middle finger dead workout and I’m suprised how my hands feel fine. When I first took up Olympic Lifting, it took 6 WEEKS for my hand to feel ‘normal’. Felt like my palms got wider.
What’s also helped is that I’ve changed to a shorter/quicker Deadlifting style. Funny how pain feels good?!?! Maybe that’s why we call ’em odd lifts? Does that make us “odd-lifters” or if we do it long enough “odd-lifers”. Yeah, that’s it. I would be proud to be known as an ODD-LIFER.

Was SUPPOSED to only do some technique work tonight but as the T-shirt says,”Screw it, I’m maxing out!”
Played with my adjustable and spotterless board press set-up(cost me about 15$ to buy and put together) tonight to work some lockout. Afterwards, I decided to give Dumbell Swings a try. Worked up to 86 1/2 lbs. NOT hooked grip, arms and legs straight. Man glutes/lower back/delts/traps nailed HARD!! Really wanted to hit 100+. I will… SOON. What the heck, the pain’s starting to feel good. Let’s go after some middle finger deads. Got 225(pr) last Sunday. Nailed 235, hard but good. Went 246, flew right up, lots easier than 235!!! 257 also jumped right up. 268 told me to take a leap. A 32lb pr this week!! Man, I’ve GOT to get those swings up!!

Aw man, Thumbbless, come on. If this grip stuff is a test of manhood, I keep testing as a fetus. Thumbless, really?! Man I got my work cut out for me.
BTW have you ever noticed that Tee “Skinny Man” Myers who Deads 750+ in his 50’s @ 180lbs ish uses a thumbbless grip???

After working up to a 255lb Clean, did some Box Squats. Gave Middle Finger Deads another go. Got 225!! Up 40lbs from last week!! Could get 245 barely off the floor. Figured I’d finish with One Handed Barbell Deads. Got 245 relatively easy but 265 barely cleared the floor. The bar was knurled in the center and I used a hook grip. Never done these with a bar before. I like ’em.
The one hand Deads sure work the side delts(caps). Would think they’d be a good heavy exercise for a bodybuilder to do before moving on to Lateral Raises.
I swear I could live to be as old as Methuselah(sic) and never be able to hit all the great exercises you could do with barbell/dumbell(s).

My best single is about 75-85lbs. I think it helps me have a bit of a higher(therefore longer) stride on Farmer’s events and the yoke carry. It’s great for shin splints.

I’m glad I alternate grips EVERY set. Don’t want too much twisting to one side. I ALWAYS alternate grips or feet on each set. I’m talking Jefferson Lifts, Hack Squats and (Split) Jerks. I’m amazed that I’m the only Olympic Lifter I know that switches feet each time I jerk…even in meets!! I’d think you’d develop a hip injury/overuse injury over time not switching it up.
                          a 640# 3″ bar Dead? Miss or no,WOW!!
I will say that training the Farmer’s Walk implements has helped alot with grip. Though I must confess I love grip work. Pinch gripping, bending nails. My fave in High School was doing Barbell Side Bends with a 45 on each side.
In Strongman competitions NOTHING beats a truck pull! Such a deep finger tendon burn felt-quite addicting if you ask me.
What’s the point of being as strong as hell if your hands and wrist can’t muckle onto something and show it??

If you’ve ever seen the newspaper movie,”The Front Page” produced by Howard Hughes in the 30’s, then you’ll know, a good reporter NEVER lets the truth get in the way of a good story!!

Boston’s about 3 hours away. Olympic lifting is dead here. Not a meet in Maine since 1987!!! Powerlifting is APF which has some GREAT meets and I get treated well but I prefer RAW and DRUG TESTING. There is some excellent Strongman meets here. I like competeing in those alot. Ultimately, I really enjoy all the different ways there are to master lifting a simple barbell(s) or dumbell(s).
BTW, what qualifies as a club??

I’m new here. I compete in Olympic lifting, Powerlifting, and Strongman. I’ve always done ODD(what I like to call functional)lifts. Sometimes when people ask me about my bodybuilding I reply,”I do anti/negative bodybuilding!” The now confused person wants to know what in the world am I talking about. I say if you took a picture of a bodybuilding routine and printed the NEGATIVE then you’d have my routine!! Now this Zercher meet sounds great!! I need to be in this next time!! How do I get in?? Some of the lifts I’d have to learn about(performance/rules) but 13 events in one day!?!?! YEEHAA now that’ll make ya want to put the lotion on the skin or ya get the hose again!!
In my attic I’ve pulled 500+ on the Jefferson Lift and Hack Squat. Both of these were among the exercises described in the DP training booklet(featuring Bruce Randall) that came with my DP plastic disc/hollow bar weight set back in eighth grade.
My Zercher Squat is about 350+ off the floor. I even used the Zercher harness at Westside Barbell before they started selling it. Man oh man I got to be in this meet next year!!
