High Country Vigour Ground to Overhead Challenge Results

In 2025, athletes were put to the test on their single arm movements. In 2026, athletes were tested with their weightlifting movements. The Clean & Press, Clean & Push Press, and Continental to Chest & Jerk are unforgiving on athlete’s shoulders but does allow demonstration of technical lifting.

Of (14) registered athletes, only (9) were able to complete the event. Four athletes in Colorado took up the challenge and another five athletes took up the challenge in Missouri. In addition to the usual suspects, Josh Williams joined us. Josh primarily trains powerlifting and bodybuilding, but learned the All-Round movements quickly.

Clean & Press – This is one of the original lifts in the Olympics and was contested from 1928 to 1972 but was removed due to difficulties in judging proper technique. In Colorado, we had no issues judging and even the heaviest lifts, did not come close to the 27 degree maximum allowed back angle. Jarrod had the top lift in Colorado at 165 pounds and Abe had the top lift overall at 185 pounds.

Clean & Push Press – This surprised me as the strongest lift among most athletes that showed a decline or only modest improvement when allowed to perform a jerk. Jarrod again had the top lift in Colorado at 185 pounds and Abe had the top lift overall at 185 pounds.

Continental to Chest & Jerk – This is the closest lift that USAWA has to a Clean & Jerk. The difference being that one can work the weight up prior to performing a jerk. I had to take advantage of this on my second attempt when I missed the clean, but caught it on my belly and then worked it up so that I could execute the jerk. Jarrod and new lifter Josh had the top lifts in Colorado at 165 pounds. Abe again had the top lift overall at 265 pounds.

Clark’s Gym had the most team points with 2,570 compared to 1,797 for the High Country Vigour crew.

None of the athletes in Colorado elected to do record session lifts. The die-hard crew in Missouri set fifteen records after the competition lifts were concluded.

Thank you to all the athletes that participated.

2025 USAWA Postal Championship

Updated 1/19/2026 to add missing Q4 Results

With the publication of the 4th Quarter Postal, we can now crown the postal champions. We use strongman scoring so if (8) women competed in Q1, 1st place would get 8 points, 2nd place would get 7 points, etc. At the end of the year, the athlete with the highest total points wins the championship.

Stacy Todd bested the women’s field with consistency. She was near the top in 1st and 2nd quarter and was first in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Lisa Gore was in 2nd place and Jessica Hopps was in 3rd place.

Abe Smith bested the men’s field with 96 total points. Barry Bryan was a close 2nd with 91 points and Jeff Wenzel completed the podium with 86 points.

Congratulations to our winners and our Grand Slam athletes who participated in all four postal events. (48) athletes participated in at least one postal event, but the following (21) athletes were committed: Stacy Todd, Lisa Gore, Jessica Hopps, Kim Van Wagner, Janet Thompson, Allison Lupo, Abe Smith, Barry Bryan, Jeff Wenzel, Dan Jones, Travis Luther, Randy Smith, Denny Habecker, Wade Marchand, Dave Hahn, Sanjiv Gupta, Nils Larson, Frank Ciavattone, Mike Locondro, Bill Clark and Jerome Licini.

2024 National Championship Meet Results

The 2024 USAWA National Championship was held in Columbia, Missouri last week. Bill Clark, who hosted the meet, writes:

THE CHAMPIONS REIGN –  BETH AND ABE RETAIN TITLES

There was little doubt after the initial event that Beth Skwarecki and Abe Smith would retain their national titles – and so it was – with 18 lifters on hand – the same as the meet drew in 2023.

Clark’s Gym, the meet sponsor for the second year in a row and the fifth time dating back to 1995, 1997 and 2001, won the team title by sweeping the first six places on the men’s side and two of the top four women.

Randy Smith, who came from Upper Michigan, was the men’s runner-up, followed by a pair of newcomers to the Nationals – Philip Marlin in third and Jeff Wenzel in fourth.

Lisa Gore, a gym member for less than two months, took third behind Beth and Stacy Todd. Allison Lupo was a close fourth.

The four Todd kids – two girls and two boys from the homes of Eric and Chris Todd – put on a great demonstration of both skill and strength and showed the flexibility and feel for the game that predicted a bright future – maybe in the Olympic Lift game as well as the odd lifts.

One of the negatives of the championship weekend was the failure of Kevin Fulton to free himself from weather-related farm problems to make it to the meet that was to honor him as a founding leader in the USAWA – the guy for whom the Fulton Bar was named.

Two of the old-timers who have been around for more than three decades were on hand. John Carter finished sixth overall and Denny Habecker, from Lebanon, Pa., was in seventh place. Habecker was the oldest lifter in the meet at 81. He brought along a guest – Steve Gardner, the long-time leader of the IAWA-UK – the British version of the USAWA.
