Wow, this is get is getting exciting. I was afraid that it would just be Kim, Jarrod, Nisha and myself. Then Ben reached out and I took a sigh of relief. With Denny throwing down, this is going to become a fun championship. If we get a few more people, I will be thrilled to find a larger venue.

Congratulations to the Ed Zercher Memorial Strength Classic Lifters. All of the lifters put up some really good numbers whether they completed 1 lift or all 13 lifts. While Jeff Wenzel did have the highest absolute total (6972 pounds), I calculated Nick Frieders having the better total by age adjusted Lynch (6175 vs 5653 pounds) and the fewest point by reverse strongman scoring (20 vs 26 points).

The reverse strongman storing gets interesting since not all lifters completed all of the lifts. I choose to have everybody who did not perform the lift tie. In the case of the harness lift, 3 of the 8 men did not complete the lift and therefore 6th, 7th and 8th would tie and all get 7 points. 1st through 3rd were the same as the top 3 men by age adjusted Lynch also that the fewest point by reverse strongman. Nick Frieders had 8 1st place lifts and Nick’s “worst” lift was the Neck Lift which Dave DeForest dominated with a 350 pound lift.

I love to see meet directors continue to test different scoring systems, especially when the Harness Lift (1st=1502, 3rd=1150 pounds; difference 352 pounds) are tested on the same platform as the Clean & Press, Heels Together (1st=180 pounds, 3rd=125 pounds). Another idea would be % of max. If first place had a 1000 age adjusted lynch they would get 100 points for that lift, if second place had a 900 age adjusted lynch they would get 90 points.

However Bill did state that there was more “pressure put on the scorer” which is already a tough job.

Love all of the comments regarding Championship Events. Also great to see that Nationals, Postal, Grip, OTSM and Presidential Cup have already been scheduled. Hopefully, we can have a Heavy Lift, Club and Team Championship in some form or maybe even a different championship event proposed.

Lift choice is an interesting rabbit hole. As I was researching the National Championships, it has been a 1-2 day event with 5-10 lifts including cleans, presses, snatches, deadlifts, squats, misc lifts, dumbbell lifts, Fulton bar lifts, Heavy Lifts and Special Equipment Lifts. Surprisingly OTSM lifts have never been in the National Championship. Part of the reason is that they were only introduced in 2011 and meet directors often choose to do repeat lifts.

Meet Directors propose lifts and those are approved by the Executive Board. I think that is a nice check and balance so our National Champions are not decided by the Back Lift, French Press and Lano Lift. There is also a fairness to the National Championship moving around the country and being promoted by different Meet Directors. Future events could be all squats, all misc lifts or anything else, but they will have be approved by the Executive Board which has traditional been pretty open to whatever meet directors propose. To date 61 different lifts have been part of the National Championship.

The past couple of years, this meet has been announced in December or January. I think it is a safe bet that Dino Gym will continue to host this great event for years to come. If Al does not host it, I would be interested in hosting it in Denver.

Looks like you and Josie put up some great numbers in King Kong. My numbers are off from last year, but I still had a lot of fun. I am going to try to drive out again this year for the Grip Championship, but travel in February is always weather dependent.

Good points. It seems like the major events Grip Championships, Heavy Lift Championship, National Championship, OTSM Championship are pretty well spaced out. Some other events like True North and Hackendinnie could certainly become premier events on the calendar as well.

Given our current membership there is probably not much risk of someone thinking they are setting a record only to have it bested the same day at another venue. More events in more regions should certainly keep current members engaged and attract new members.

Always fun to see what other strength sports folks compete in:

Thom, I was looking at the NASGA database and those are some impressive numbers. 33 foot sheaf toss is amazing. I know Chad competes in Highland Games and there are probably several others who compete in All-Round Weightlifting and Highland Games.

Ben, Good to hear that you will be doing King Kong. I am planning on competing as well. I have not had many grip specific training sessions, but I figure I still have a little over a month to get ready.

My big accomplishment for the year outside of All-Round was finishing a local short course triathlon with 750 meter open water swim, 10 mile bike and 5K run. My next big event general fitness event will by Hyrox.

Hope folks add to this thread to discuss there All-Round Weightlifting competition plans and other athletic endeavors.

While it is great to see all the new venues, do we really need three different sanctioned sanctioned record days on the same day (October 12th)? I think it would be great if only one club sanctioned, compiled results and allowed hybrid entries. The only downside I noticed is that it would be harder for clubs to accumulate points towards club of the year.

Barry, thanks for adding your thoughts. I hope everything at home resolves favorably. This thread made me realize how important the annual national meeting is and how 9 athletes (the majority of 17 in attendance last year) could decide the future of the USAWA. Maybe we are at the point of considering virtual attendance or absentee voting. Even though I sat in on the proposals committee, the discussion on this forum, USAWA website and Facebook page have got me reconsidering my positions.

Good to know about the broken belts. I might have to come up with something to distribute the force over a few inches.

Still kind of cool that the lift has been on the books since at least 1990 (oldest record by Howard Prechtel at 1815 pounds). It was then contested at the 2006 Dino Gym Challenge where the top marks were set at 740 pounds for women and 2000 pounds for men. There has not been a record recorded for almost a decade since the 2015 Florida Record Day.

Great points brought up about the mission of the USAWA and why some proposals are being brought up. Nowhere in the USAWA mission statement is competition mentioned, much less fairness of competition, finding the strongest lifter, coming up with crazy new lifts or keeping records mentioned.

The proposals all focus around competition in some form or another. Maybe more time should be spent on “the lifts we perform” instead of uniforms, classification of lifts, new lifts and officiating.

Alternatively, maybe by having uniforms aligned with other strength sports we can bring more members to the organization. Introducing crazy new lifts for the sheer spectacle of them can continue the long standing tradition of old-time weightlifters who were seeking ways to draw an audience. There was a wow factor associated with doing something not everyone could do.
