I really enjoyed reading John Strangeway’s article on Lift Programming.
I have always considered myself a general physical preparedness athlete first and all-round athlete second. That has meant typically training at a CrossFit gym or using high intensity interval training, with powerlifting movements and running and to a lesser degree bicycling and swimming. I would typically just test my 90% effort on USAWA lifts the weeks prior to competition.
I felt like it was not worth the disruption to general training to dial in on a 1RM for a USAWA competition. I would prefer conventional set up with full range of motion without peaking. The article highlighted that the training disruption could be minimal if I am thoughtful about my warm-up movements and/or grip.
The article is timely if I want to try the programming to prep for the Hermann Goerner Deadlift Dozen – Plus One.
