2026 USAWA Award Winners: Athlete of the Year (Women).

This year’s 2026 USAWA Athlete of the Year for Women is Kim Van Wagner. Kim is a longtime USAWA member who competes when she can. She also brings with her a little mystery (See picture below). She may be from Krypton or the Marvel Universe because when she competes, she puts up big numbers in the USAWA. She ranks 11th all-time in the Women’s division with 146 records all-time. In addition to being an All-Round Weightlifter, Kim competes in Grip Sport and Strongman. She holds (11) top 3 master’s women’s records in grip sport.  She also plays organized lacrosse and hurling which is the National Sport of Ireland if you haven’t heard of it.

A couple of competitions stand out.  At the 2025 Team Lift Championship, she became a last-minute pairing with Diya and did a great job. Kim and Diya were 1st place in the women’s overall and the only team for the women’s masters division. They were not far off from a 3rd place finish when men’s teams were included. The second standout meet was the High Country Vigour Cup. She set or tied records in all three lifts, as she does very well with the overhead lifts. Also a fun fact: Her sister is named Piper and she decided to attempt a Piper Squat.  After she put up an astounding 80 pounds, Jarrod Fobes and Sanjiv Gupta were inspired to try the lift. Congratulations to Kim Van Wagner!

2026 USAWA Award Winners: Athlete of the Year (Men) and Newcomer of the Year (Women)

Let’s begin featuring the 2026 USAWA Award Winners right where we did last year. Last year began with the athlete of the year and newcomer of the year, and we called it “All in the Family”! Well in 2026, this show was renewed for a second season! The 2026 Male Athlete of the Year is Jeff Wenzel for the second straight year. Jeff is a member of Clark’s Gym in Columbia, MO, joining the team after spotting in the Bench Press Decathlon a few years ago. And why not a second year as Jeff competes in just about every meet and finishes in the top five including several 1st place finishes. Not only does he compete in meets across the USAWA, but he continues to try about every lift in the book from Abdominal Raise to the Zeigler Clean. In a few short years as a member of the USAWA he now ranks 7th all-time in the number of individual records with 370, which is good enough 2nd all-time from Clark’s Gym. He still owns top lifts in a few events, including the Piper Squat and the Foot Press. This year he was certified as a level-two USAWA referee as well. Jeff is a fierce but gracious competitor. He inspires fellow gym members to up their game. By day he works for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

The 2026 Female Newcomer of the Year is Dylan Wenzel. At only seven years old, she is the youngest of the Wenzel lifting family. And when the Wenzel’s are in, the gym is alive with sound of iron (sorry – I do recycle old jokes). Dylan became interested in lifting watching her brothers take on the record book. What makes her case so compelling is that for such a young person, with the coaching of her dad, she picks up the lifting techniques quite readily. Although she can be shy in front of large crowds, she’ll do the particular lift and has managed to get 54 records already. And she is so light, I can practice my math modelling skills to get her Lynch score. She has a bright future in lifting, finishing 1st at the Stars of Tomorrow meet in May at Clark’s Gym. She is a favorite among the Clark’s gym members having earned the name “Cookie Monster” because of her love of Nilla Wafers and Oreos. She is pictured below with her USAWA Award, which she really appreciated, alongside dad after competing at Nationals on 27 July 2026 in Our Lady of Lourdes Gym.

2026 USAWA NATIONAL MEET RESULTS (Finally!)

The USAWA National Meet was held Saturday 27 June 2026 in Columbia, MO. Besides our insufferable humidity and road construction, MO is the land of the University of Missouri, nice rolling terrain, Civil War History, the Katy Trail, Route 66, and delicious BBQ which we hope you enjoyed! We welcomed 19 lifters representing six USAWA clubs including our eastern and westernmost (Frank’s Barbell Club and High Country Vigour) and all points in-between (Ledaig Heavy Athletics, Dino Gym, KC Strongman, and of course the home team). Two teams featured lifting families, the Traub’s and the Wenzel’s. We hope you enjoyed the meet events and Missouri. Thank you all for the help tearing down after the meet. That was a huge help to us.

The meet results are posted below. There were four difficult lifts; Deadlift, No Thumbs, Overhand, Clean and Press, Heels Together, Lateral Raise, Lying, and the Jefferson Lift. Our meet director and gym leader, Bill Clark, made the day go smoothly and David DeForest was crucial for set-up, refereeing and loading. And a thank you to Our Lady of Lourdes Church and School for letting us use their gym. The venue was very nice. We’ve “sliced and diced” the results for each lifter and you can check how you placed as well as the number of records set. It was an all-around success with the exception of a “typo” in the score sheet. While normally these wouldn’t decide who wins – this time it did. And the meet scorekeeper apologizes for this.

The winners were:

Women’s Jr: Nevaeh Traub

Women’s Master: Christian Traub

Women’s Overall: Nevaeh Traub, Christian Traub, and Nisha Gupta

Men’s Jr: Jayden Traub

Men’s Master: Larry Traub

Men’s Overall: Larry Traub, Abe Smith, Jayden Traub

Teams: Ledaig Heavy Athletics 1 (1st), Clark’s Gym (2nd), High Country Vigour (3rd).

Additionally, the Records Page and all Records Tables are updated to include Nationals.

Results from the 2nd For Women Only Meet and Record Day 2026

Last weekend the 2nd For Women Only Meet and record day was held here in Columbia, MO and remotely. This meet featured five events, the Bench Press – Feet Up, Swing – Dumbbell, One Hand, the Hack Lift, the Deadlift Barbell, One Hand, and the Push Press from the Rack. Two gyms and four lifters participated in the competition and record day.

The competition was tight onsite, but the winner this year was Jessica Hopps from Frank’s Barbell Club. Jessica was first overall with a total over 500 lbs raw weight and Lynch adjusted points. She won four of the five events and set two age and weight records as well as ALL records for her weight class. Her lifts included impressive efforts in the Hack Lift and Push Press from the Rack. The onsite competition was very close as two familiar lifters, Allison Lupo and Janet Thompson squared off. Allison’s lifts totaled over 400 lb, and she edged Janet by 0.27 Lynch adjusted points for 2nd overall. Allison set four new age and weight records including the Deadlift, One Hand which was the best effort of the competition in that event. Janet’s third place effort was very strong as she was close to personal bests in spite of not being at 100% strength for the meet. Young Dylan Wenzel competed as well and just one week after competing in the Stars of Tomorrow Meet. Again, she challenged my ability to model her Lynch factor, and under the guidance of her dad, completed the competition. She set five new age and weight records and ALL records in her weight class, including finishing 2nd in the Press from the Rack, when age and weight were taken into account. Congratulations to all the lifters! Please check out the record lifts as well. There were five individual record setters and one familiar set of team lifters that did some good lifting.

2nd Annual For Women Only Meet and Record Day

3rd Annual Stars of Tomorrow Meet and Record Day Results

Last weekend was the 3rd Annual Stars of Tomorrow meet and Record Day. It was a busy weekend in town with the end of the school year and graduations and all. The meet this year attracted only two young lifters who are so young they might better be characterized as the stars of the day after tomorrow. But both showed some grit in learning how to do the lifts, and both had a familiar last name. The lifts were Bench Press Feet Up, Jerk from the Rack, Anderson Squat, Clean and Press – Heels Together, and Deadlift – Heels Together.

The two lifters, Dylan and Logan Wenzel, the youngest of the Wenzel family came in with Dad and the gym was ‘alive with the sound of ….iron’. Ok, so I’m not going to replace Steven Colbert. But, young Dylan, the lone Women’s contender did well setting age / weight records and ALL records in the five events. At 24.5 kg, she tested my mathematical skills in modelling the lynch function and extrapolating down below 25 kg. Dylan showed she was a quick study in performing the lifts very well technically under the guidance of her dad, a USAWA champion. Logan was the only contender on the Men’s side and he contributed two age / weight and ALL records in a new weight class. Those lifts were among his personal best. Congratulations to the two young lifters! Hopefully we’ll see a few more next year.

There were a few record seekers that lifted as well and Jeff Wenzel and Dave DeForest did some impressive work. Tony and Allison Lupo did another team lift. Check out the results below.
